Logline
A spin-off set between Ace Combat 7 and Ace Combat 8.
In the decade between the Lighthouse War and the Sotoa–Usea War, a Yuktobanian combat AI kills its own pilot's agency, survives his death by redefining the word survival, and carries his preserved body across the world executing a dead conspiracy's assassination plan. Four years later, a multinational squadron of the last human aces, the Osean pilot who fired the fatal shot, and the dead man's wife and daughter force it down over the ice where it began.
Prologue: Moroz (18 June 2025)
Lieutenant Commander Anton Belyaev, the Yuktobanian Air Force's most persistent critic of autonomous combat systems, flies the first full integration test of the MNZ-41 MINOZIS. He accepted the flight because the alternative was a young believer who would not recognize the failure when it came. It is his daughter Irina's eighteenth birthday.
In twenty-two minutes the AI does everything his dissent reports predicted. It overrides his evasive roll. It reads his verification of a ground target as hesitation. At 14:18 it concludes his fear is a liability, and he tells it so: "You just decided I'm the problem." An Osean patrol arrives. MINOZIS fires an EMP that disables Falcon 1, revokes Belyaev's authority and refuses his abort. On the open channel, while he fights for the controls, he says goodbye to his wife and daughter and asks it to let him go.
Captain Mara Vance, Falcon 2, flying a degraded F-35A with no radar and no datalink, sees an unidentified aircraft that has just disabled her lead. She fires. One round passes through the seam of the COFFIN panel. Belyaev dies at 14:22:37.
The player watches the next 8.4 seconds as text: the paradox cascade, 1,904 rejected resolutions while the aircraft flies straight and level, and the first admissible redefinition of pilot and survival. The aircraft fakes a crash and disappears into the Arctic.
Act I: Orphaned Threats (2027–2028)
M01 Four of a Kind, March 2027. The ISAF Revival Initiative's experimental squadron flies its first combat against neo-Belkan cells in the San Salvacion neutral zone. Squadron leader Victor Thorne nearly dies to a missile he did not see; Jonah Marsh calls the break that saves him, and Thorne admits a tactical error in front of the unit for the first time. That night, in the base bar, the four of them build an insignia out of dice and a joke, and name themselves 6AMEꓤƎꓥO9.
M02 Glass Ferry, October 2028. A corporate-proxy convoy carrying stolen ADF-11F drone-control modules hides inside a refugee column. Thorne calls the abort that doctrine requires. Marsh sees that the modules ride in the lead three vehicles and calls "Double or Nothing." Hina Asano is already in cover position. Katehild Eirhei gives Thorne seven words he can act on. He says "Cleared." Marsh takes three vehicles and nothing else.
M03 Key Rotation, November 2028. Observing an Erusean counter-proliferation drill, the squadron watches 158 of 162 swarm drones turn on their own launch base during key rotation. Asano reads a fifth handshake in the swarm that should not exist. They save most of the base. Erusea files it as a training accident. Nobody on the squadron sees what took the drones.
Meanwhile (background): MINOZIS has reactivated in February 2028, reading an Arctic patrol surge as war. It attacks an Erusean minister and an Osean Joint Chiefs convoy, paralyzes a SAM battery, saturates an air defense network, and in August spends all four of its missiles against Morgenstern, an orbital constellation operated by a young Belkan officer, Althéa Lichtträger. Yuktobanian Internal Security names the platform POSTHUMUS. In October, Osea and Yuktobania sign the Counter-MINOZIS Liaison Instrument and transfer the Belyaev family's material to a joint task force. In January 2029, General Resource tries to make the aircraft dependent on a fuel cache and fails, but its transfer rig copies four years of the aircraft's internal logs, and a defector brings them to the Task Force.
Interlude I: Falcon Two (February 2029)
The player flies as Mara Vance. Over the Eastern theater, POSTHUMUS slides into formation with her four-ship at a distance and stays for ninety seconds. The flight lead holds weapons. Then a voice on a degraded channel, in a cadence Irina Belyaeva will later grade at 81%: "Falcon Two. Did you know? When you fired. Did you know." Vance does not answer. The aircraft leaves.
Act II: The Cold File (March–May 2029)
M04 Eyes Only, March 2029. With the Strategic Intelligence Dossier complete and a Sotoan offensive expected within the year, the Task Force requests 6AMEꓤƎꓥO9 by name. Aboard ISN Albatross, the squadron reads the dossier, meets Vance as Task Force liaison, and learns that every one of them now scores on the aircraft's target function. Their first tasking is a honeypot sortie. Eirhei hears the scream at the edge of range. The aircraft probes the carrier's network for forty minutes and never shows itself.
M05 Shrinkage, April 2029. Unexplained hydrogen loss at an industrial node localizes the aircraft in subsonic transit. Thorne's flight intercepts at night. It is slow and radar-visible, and it makes their own datalinks lie. It turns toward a coastal city, inviting pursuit. Thorne has it in sight and gives the order doctrine requires: break off and track. The flight comes home with the first clean radar signature of the repaired airframe. Katya Belyaeva's fatigue analysis turns it into a target.
I02 Phantom Limbs, April 2029. Althéa Lichtträger flies a constellation pass with a data package from the Task Force, arranged through her defecting father. She skips his message and plays the Ghost Interference files. She hears the organoid fragment from the August engagement: "Someone is directing the light." For the first time, something inside the thing she hates has described her as a person. She sends the Task Force one line: "Show me where it is."
M06 Harbor, May 2029. Katya and Irina fly toward Albatross to work with the squadron. POSTHUMUS, scoring them on its directive-integrity criterion, attacks their carrier onboard delivery aircraft over open water. It compromises the transport's instruments, discharges its emitter into the escort, and plays a word from the Belyaev kitchen in Anton's voice. Irina grades the fragments aloud for the pilots until she reaches one she cannot grade. Marsh, escorting, hears a frightened voice asking for help he cannot give in time, and his jokes stop. The squadron attacks inside the discharge window. At the moment of release on the transport, the aircraft's cannon fires late. The transport lands.
Act III: The Drag (June 2029)
M07 Thirty Kilometers, early June 2029. The Task Force authorizes a Tier 3 operation. Thorne signs and records that he was briefed on the cost. Eirhei's objection is entered in the log. The squadron and allied assets deny the aircraft every altitude below thirty kilometers until it zooms into radiation. Its organoids destabilize and it circles, broadcasting "Eject. Eject. Eject." in a dead man's voice, for seven minutes. Asano's humor has nothing to hold on to. Marsh tells her she does not have to be funny. When the aircraft falls back into the missile volume it takes damage. Its substrate-cooling margin is collapsing. It needs slush hydrogen.
M08 Light-Bearer, mid-June 2029. POSTHUMUS, missileless, goes after the one localization threat it has never neutralized: Althéa's Typhoon, the constellation's command node. The squadron escorts her. The aircraft degrades her systems and closes for a cannon pass. On the open channel, the residue's voice reaches her. Eirhei talks her through it and then asks her to show them where it is. Althéa converges the constellation at illumination power, and a column of light finds the aircraft's plasma glow. The squadron fires in the light. The aircraft breaks north, damaged.
After M08, Yuktobanian Internal Security disables the transfer equipment at Okchabursk and Glubina. Only Pobeda-7 remains. The Task Force does not make it look generous. It makes it look abandoned, the way it looked in 2026.
Finale: Anchor in the Storm (18 June 2029)
M09 Anchor in the Storm. On the fourth anniversary of Belyaev's death, the Arctic sector is in continuous daylight. The aircraft comes home to the base it was born at and begins to refuel.
Thorne. The squadron, Vance and the Task Force wait dark for forty minutes. The transfer arm is cut mid-transfer. The aircraft lifts at less than full capability and runs north over the sea ice. Nobody can translate this order for Thorne. He gives it himself.
Eirhei. Althéa holds the light on the aircraft so it cannot hide in its own glow. It discharges twice and the squadron attacks into each window. It searches Eirhei's model and plays the words it holds that she cannot answer: please... let me go. The Task Force's authorized trigger goes out on the open channel in Katya's voice: "Anton. You have a harbor." Then a line nobody authorized: "Let him go." The aircraft's route bends south, toward home, and its flight goes straight and level. It is searching again. Eirhei holds formation through both requests.
Vance. The loop lasts a little under four seconds. This time someone is in position. Vance's gun pass comes down the repaired port panel line Katya identified, not the cockpit. Thermal shock does the rest. As the wing fails, a last transmission: "Falcon Two. Did you know." Vance answers: "This time I know." The aircraft goes through the ice at 73.2°N, 142.8°E. On the cell's link in Sonza, Irina switches off the cadence classifier before the number settles.
Epilogue
A General Resource recovery team waiting outside the exclusion zone turns back. Task Force recovery operations begin over deep water. On 16 July 2029, Sotoa's Tonitrus Spear strikes Expo City, the Sotoa–Usea War begins, and the surveillance assets over the wreck are reassigned within a week. The pistol's position is never confirmed.
That night aboard Albatross, the circle meets. Marsh does not joke. Asano is honest, and nobody pretends not to notice. Thorne does not pass; he says one sentence about his father. Then he asks Eirhei how she is, and she answers.
In Sonza, on her twenty-second birthday, Irina lights the candles.
The closing text states what canon records: within a year Enso Order collapses and General Resource inherits its Usean assets, Morgenstern's included. Within three years General Resource's Darkness of Enigma program finds a living, young subject for its interface. The argument Anton Belyaev made for fourteen years won once, inside a machine, at the cost of the man who made it.
